Childbirth Ed, Newborn Care, and Breastfeeding Classes | Erie PA Childbirth Class

March 15, 2025 Christine Dougan

Our Certified Childbirth Educators are passionate about helping you feel prepared for birth & postpartum! Classes are a great way to bond with both your baby and your partner as you get ready for the big event and the transition that comes after baby is born.

Prenatal Education has been proven to diminish fear. After some discussion, learning and hands-on practice, you will feel more prepared and resourceful. Whether this is your first baby, you’re planning a VBAC, or you want to do things completely differently this time around, we support you!

Private education is all about you: your unique preferences, your unique personality, your unique journey. No matter what type of birth and postpartum experience you are hoping for, we are compassionate and equipped with the tools to help you learn and prepare. Nurturing your connection with your partner and asking those uncomfortable or emotionally intensive questions is easiest when you are in the comfort of your own home.

When it comes to childbirth…

It’s our belief that labor is 80% mental and 20% physical. So much confidence comes with learning your options and making a plan for positions, comfort, advocacy, and the logistics of what to expect during each phase of labor (early, active, transition, and pushing). Birth with knowledge and options is much more enjoyable! Both parents are able to breathe a sigh of relief after class when they are able to envision their birth experience more clearly.

We recommend that all classes be completed by 34 weeks since babies can arrive early, and your final weeks of pregnancy are filled with lots of prenatal appointments already. Most people like to take their classes early in their third trimester. If you sign up for multiple classes, we plan to meet once a week until all classes are completed.

We respect your busy schedule. Our classes are taught privately in the comfort of your home. Weekday, weeknight, and weekend dates are available.

Postpartum Planning Session $100 (2 hours)

Birth is just the beginning! The postpartum period is a critical time. After completing your pregnancy and conquering childbirth, you might think it’s time to get back to “life as usual.” However, the postpartum period is a time when you should carefully ease yourself back into everyday routines instead of returning to all your responsibilities at once. Give your body a chance to relax and recover—you’ve done a lot of hard, important work!

Our postpartum doulas are here to help you prepare so you can best enjoy and care for your new bundle. Parents often have a difficult time adjusting to the stresses of a newborn-- from infant feeding to sleepless nights to postpartum blues, and everything in between. Your doula helps everyone in the family cope with these new challenges.

Making sure you have a plan in place after you bring your baby home is important to make a smooth adjustment as your family grows. Let's make sure you have a good support system in place and a plan for when the tough times hit!

*We recommend this session to be completed before you reach 36 weeks.
*If you’ve hired a postpartum doula, Postpartum Planning is already included at no additional charge.

Postpartum Prep Bundle $175 (4 hours)

Be fully prepared for postpartum! This class includes the Your Best Postpartum Class as well as a Postpartum Planning session.

Birth Planning Session $100 (2 hours)

You've got the clothes, the car seat, the stroller. Practical planning for the baby is easily done thanks to a quick browse on Pinterest and a little Amazon shopping. What you can't find on the internet though is real, in depth, nonjudgmental information and connection. Even if you've already done this birth thing before, hospital policies and options have likely changed.

We are so happy to help you learn all your options and step into your labor room with confidence. One of the ways we do this is by setting up a birth plan. We encourage you to bring your completed birth plan to your 36 week appointment to go over it with your OB/midwife and make your preferences known.

A Childbirth Educator/doula will explain all your options for birth preferences and talk through the pros and cons to find what makes the most sense for your family. You will receive a typed birth plan via email after class is complete.

*A cesarean birth plan is included at no additional charge. Please allow for 20 extra minutes if you would like both a vaginal and cesarean plan. Many people don’t realize that there are several things about a cesarean that can be personalized! This is called a “gentle” or “family-centered cesarean.” This is beneficial for families planning a scheduled cesarean, as well as families who want to have a plan in place in case an unexpected cesarean becomes required.

*We recommend this session to be completed before you reach 36 weeks.
*If you’ve hired a birth doula, Birth Planning is already included at no additional charge.

The Modern Grandparent- Grandparents Class $100 (2 hours)

"The Modern Grandparent" is taught in your home or virtually. Though this class is geared specifically toward grandparents-to-be, the parents-to-be are also encouraged to attend and participate.

Class Goals:

  • Bring grandparents up to date with current (ever-evolving) safety, health, and childcare recommendations.

  • Establish effective communication, expectations, and boundaries between grandparents and parents of the newborn baby.

  • Bust baby-related myths in a non-threatening, engaging way.

  • Respect the knowledge and experience that grandparents bring to the table.

Big Sibling Prep Class $75 (1 hour)

When a new baby is on the way, most parents want to do something special to prepare their older child to make sure they feel confident and special in their new role. Our Big Sibling Prep Class takes place in the comfort of your home and parents are encouraged to attend. You can expect class to last 45-60 minutes depending on how talkative/inquisitive your child is.

By providing children with education and experiences that relate to newborn babies, the expectation is that they will feel more at ease and have the tools to develop a healthy sibling bond.

A sibling class includes a lot of play and is very relaxed. The goal is to have fun, while making the big sibling feel super special as they learn all about newborns. There is some discussion, we read a book together, dress a baby doll, practice feeding/burping/changing, and at the end of class the big sibling gets a diploma and a prize.

*I hired a birth doula team, should I still take classes? Yes, absolutely! We recommend that all our clients take a basic Childbirth Education Class, at the very least. This is a necessity with a first baby, a VBAC, or if you want to do things completely differently this time around.

There is so much to learn surrounding pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and newborn care... much more than your doula could possibly cover during your prenatal and postpartum visits. Having dedicated time with your partner devoted to talking about all things baby is a bonding experience that will help you both feel prepared.

*Ask about our discount for taking classes together with a friend who is also expecting! When signing up with a friend and gathering together in one of your homes for your classes, you will both save 10%. This is a lot of fun. Past clients have enjoyed snacking and laughing as they prepare for birth with their besties.
